In the morning, the Poojakan first awakens the deity, opens the door, lights the lamps, and performs Abhishekam, Malar Nivedyam, Usha Nivedyam, morning Pooja, Pantheeradi Pooja (when the shadow lengthens to 12 steps), Noon Pooja, Sreebali along with any of the Poojas, Pradosha Pooja (evening Pooja, if normally practiced in that temple), Athaazha (night meals) Pooja, Athaazha Sreebali and Thruppuka. Pooja is the core of worshiping God, in a Thaanthric sense. It’s purpose, in essence, is to propitiate the eternal and boundless God in any of it’s manifestations (Siva, Vishnu, Durga etc.) by bringing or invoking one of the desired forms to the Poojakan’s (Poojaari’s) presence, and giving a general royal reception through various oblations and offerings (clothes, decorations, feast etc.), accompanied by chanting of hymns and Manthrams. It is an aspect of Karma Yogam.

Abhishekam, is conducted by priests, by pouring libations on the image of the deity being worshipped, amidst the chanting of mantras. Usually, offerings such as milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, Panchaamrutam, Sesame oil, rosewater, sandalwood paste may be poured among other offerings depending on the type of abhishekam being performed. This ritual is routinely performed in most Hindu and Jain temples.
